How The Brain Works

Scientist Jill Bolte Taylor Talks About Her Conscious Experience of Having a Stroke

I was moved to tears as I watched this phenomenal video of Brain Scientist, Jill Bolte Taylor, tell her story about her amazingly insightful and powerful experience of having a stroke. In May 2008 she was named to Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

"This is an absolute must-watch. Set aside 18 minutes and prepare to be floored. Consensus among TED’sters is that this may be the most memorable and important TED Talk ever. It was certainly the most talked-about presentation among those at TED2008. Enjoy and share with others. And let Jill’s experience inspire, motivate, and change the way you look at life."

A Woman of Power

Lynn V. Andrews
Writer, Lecturer, Teacher, Shaman

Here is a woman who I consider to be a "Woman of Power." A woman who lives the poem "Imagine a Woman" in my previous post. At a very timely juncture in my life, I was drawn to start reading Lynn's books, which were incredibly healing for me at the time. It was a period of my life where I felt lost and in limbo. It was after my life-partner had passed away. I was browsing through the library one day and I felt strongly compelled toward a certain area of the library, then a certain section, then a very particular shelf. When I looked, I could feel all this energy coming from the books. I picked one out and took it home. I thought, if nothing else, it will be really fun to read a good story and be entertained.

What I began to read was absolutely amazing, and I did not stop reading until I had read every book Lynn had written! They spoke to me at a very deep level. These stories were of women, ancient women, and ancient women's teachings. The stories lead you through Lynn's personal life experiences with two very powerful female native American teachers that Lynn magically meets through these marvelously synchronistic events. Lynn's stories are about the teachings, initiations, and powerful tranformations that she undergoes, and of her experiences with an ancient and mysterious group of women called the "Sisterhood of the Shields."

When I read her books, I could feel the truth of her experiences in my Being. They spoke to that part of my womanhood and femaleness that longed for these teachings. The part of me that has grown up and lived (like most of us) in an extremely patriarchal culture that has denied, repressed, and forcibly silenced that uniquely feminine and womanly part of ourselves (man or woman, we all have a feminine and masculine side via our right and left brains!). That feminine part of us is located within our feelings of receptivity, intuition, nurturing and mothering, and in our soft, tender, gentle, loving and kind ways. It is also that part of us that strongly connects to the earth, to nature, to animals and to all beings.

I felt a rekindling and reconnection within me. I could feel my self-esteem and self-confidence rise, as well as a newfound sense of strength and courage. I could feel Lynn's stories coursing through me, awakening and reconnecting ancient parts of myself and my womanhood.

Several years later, through synchronistic events, I found myself sitting beside Lynn Andrews for lunch one day. It was like a dream. It seemed we had a mutual friend who just happened to mention to me that he knew her, and made arrangements for me to meet her. It was a wonderful experience. She had an amazingly beautiful energetic presence. And I got to express to her how deeply grateful I was for her teachings.

About Lynn Andrews:

Leader in the field of spirituality and personal development, ranked as one of the top self-improvement experts in the world, and considered pre-eminent in the field of global shamanic cosmologies, Lynn is the author of 19 books and workbooks, including Woman at the Edge of Two Worlds, A Spiritual Journey Through Menopause and The Power Deck, Cards of Wisdom.

She is the creator of “Menopause and the Feminine Rites of Passage” - meditations, ceremonies and exercises for transformation and joy for all stages of a woman's life, from puberty through menopause. And architect of the Personal Act of Power - tools for spiritual growth and personal empowerment.

Lynn is also a writing teacher, successful female business owner and founder of the Lynn Andrews Center for Sacred Arts and Training, now in its 14th year, and the Joshua Tree Gathering, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2008.

About Lynn's Work:

Lynn Andrews' writings reflect the juxtaposition of our urban lives with the magical existence expressed by the wisdom of her native American teachers. Following the practice of her teachers, she tells stories and relates experiences - that at first may seem unrelated. But when the fragments and pieces are brought together, they form a coherent whole
.

Andrews writes:
"There is magic in this world if you want the world to be magical. If you want life to be special, it will be. No one wants to be bored or consumed by ordinary drudgery. But what happens, all too often, is that when magic is presented to us, we don't believe it, because we don't trust ourselves. We don't realize what can really be accomplished. We don't realize that if we wish to, we can take other forms. We can sit in the presence of the great masters, angels, or ancient seers of wisdom and find peace and wisdom, but it takes many small deaths, the giving away of old limitations, to get there."

Here are a few quotes from Lynn Andrews' book Shakkai, Woman of the Sacred Garden
“When you work in the world of power as a woman of power, you make a few dear friends and you isolate yourself from the world, because very few can understand your commitment, your pain, your desire for compassion and love. Few can relate to your life and what you seek.”
"We make such a drama out of life. For some reason the human being has to develop an extraordinary ego just to exist. Because of that ego, we think we are better than the flowers, better than the animals and the birds, and certainly better than other human beings and races that are not our own, but in fact life is simply life, and life is sacred. Beyond anything, life is sacred.”
“So many of us move outside ourselves to find truth. We go out into the world in search of something larger than ourselves. We do not realize that truth lies within. What we create in the world we must first create within ourselves.”
“The path of illumination is the path of balance, the path of balance with one foot in the material world and one foot securely rooted in the spiritual world. Many people today who are on this path, the path of spirit, are filled with anger from their childhoods. They never deal with that anger, and they throw away the physical life out of a need to reject the pain of their earlier life, and they call themselves spiritual. But they sabotage themselves at every turn. They hold up a spirit shield, but their feet are not planted on bedrock. Their feet are planted in quicksand, and spiritual power will eventually overwhelm them. Then one day they will have to hear the voice of the great teachers, and that voice will tell them that they need to go back and learn to walk in balance. For everything you do spiritually, you need to strengthen your body as well. You must stay centered, always living in your center, looking out from that place of your sacred witness into the world.”

Imagine A Woman

Imagine a Woman
by Patricia Lynn Reilly, M. Div.

Imagine a woman
who believes it is right and good she is woman.
A woman who honors her experience and tells her stories.
Who refuses to carry the sins of others within her body and life.

Imagine a woman
who believes she is good.
A woman who trusts and respects herself.
Who listens to her needs and desires and meets them with tenderness and grace.

Imagine a woman
who has acknowledged the past's influence on the present.
A woman who has walked through her past.
Who has healed into the present.

Imagine a woman
who authors her own life.
A woman who exerts, initiates, and moves on her own behalf.
Who refuses to surrender except to her truest self and to her wisest voice.

Imagine a woman
who names her own gods.
A woman who imagines the divine in her image and likeness.
Who designs her own spirituality and allows it to inform her daily life.

Imagine a woman
in love with her own body.
A woman who believes her body is enough, just as it is.
Who celebrates her body and its rhythms and cycles as an exquisite resource.

Imagine a woman
who honors the face of the Goddess in her changing face.
A woman who celebrates the accumulation of her years and her wisdom.
Who refuses to use her precious life energy disguising the changes in her body and life.

Imagine a woman
who values the women in her life.
A woman who sits in circles of women.
Who is reminded of the truth about herself when she forgets.

Imagine yourself as this woman.

The Suppressed Histories Archives

The Suppressed Histories Archives: Women in Global Perspective, compiled by Max Dashu, aims to uncover the realities of women's lives, internationally and across time, asking questions about patriarchy and slavery, conquest and aboriginality. About mother-right, goddess veneration, shamanic arts and philosophies of spirit -- and the historical chemistry of their repression. Even more important, their role in resisting oppression.

A global perspective on women’s history offers fresh and diverse conceptions of women's power, as well as of men and gender borders. It overturns stereotypes of race and class, and the structures of domination that hold them up. It digs under the usual story of lords and rulers, looking for hidden strands, and reweaves knowledge from the divided fields of history, archaeology, linguistics and folk tradition. So we cast a wide arc, looking for patterns and gaps and contradictions which, where vested power interests are at stake, are trigger points for controversy. Some of the flashpoints are neolithic female figurines; women's power; goddess reverence; gender-egalitarian mother-right cultures; patriarchy; witch-hunts; and the rise and fall of empires, with all their doctrines of supremacy and inferiority.

The female cultural record is far richer than textbooks or the media let us know. Let's get to the juicy stuff: the creative, inspired, valiant women; and cultures that honor their female achievers, wisewomen, artists, leaders...

Max Dashu's articles and presentations include:

Women's Power DVD: A panoramic view of female leadership, creativity, wisdom, and courage, around the world and for thousands of years.

Rebel Shamans: Indigenous Women Confront Empire

Matrix Cultures: In the Web of Life

Secret History of Witches

Shamanic Priestesses of East Africa: Nyabingi Priestesses

Saint Rose of Viterbo

Saint Rose of Viterbo

Saint Rose of Viterbo was born in Viterbo, Italy in 1235, and died March 6, 1252. The chronology of her life remains uncertain, as the Acts of her canonization, the chief historical sources, record no dates. Those given are accepted by the best authorities.

Born of poor and pious parents, Rose was remarkable for holiness and for her miraculous powers from her earliest years. When she was three years old, she raised from the dead her maternal aunt. At the age of seven, she had already lived the life of a recluse, devoting herself to prayers.

At age ten, her health succumbed, but she was miraculously cured by the Blessed Virgin, who ordered her to enroll herself in the Third Order of St. Francis, and to preach and pray to Viterbo, at that time (1247) held by Frederick II of Germany and a prey to political strife and heresy. Her mission seems to have extended for about two years, and such was her success that the prefect of the city decided to banish her. The imperial power was seriously threatened. Accordingly, Rose and her parents were expelled from Viterbo in January, 1250, and took refuge in Sorriano.

Saint Rose was often seen with birds of all kinds around her. She could levitate, and was also a phrophetess, and on December 5, 1250, Rose foretold the speedy death of the emperor, a prophecy realized on December 13th of that same year. Soon afterwards she went to Vitorchiano, whose inhabitants had been perverted by a famous sorceress. Rose secured the conversion of all, even of the sorceress, by standing unscathed for three hours in the flames of a burning pyre that she herself set, a miracle as striking as it is well attested. With the restoration of Pope Alexander IV to papal power in Viterbo (1251) Rose returned.

She wished to enter the monastery of St. Mary of the Roses, but was refused because of her poverty (she did not have a dowry). She humbly submitted, foretelling her admission to the monastery after her death. The remainder of her life was spent in the cell in her father's house, where she died. Pope Alexander IV ordered her body layed to rest in the convent that had refused her. Her feast is celebrated on 4 September, when her body, still incorrupt, is carried in procession through Viterbo.

Attaining Enlightenment Through Relationship

Attaining Enlightenment through Relationship
by Paula Sunray (1941 - 2007)

Life is about relationship.

It is your main spiritual practice.

Relationships are difficult and challenging spiritual practices. They give us the opportunity to test our skills of communication, intimacy, authenticity, and integrity. They also give us a chance to retrieve our soul and our spirit.

Have you stopped dancing with your soul? Have you stopped letting your soul sing and express from its very heart and being? So many people have lost their song of life and their enchantment with life. When they learn to rekindle their heart song and reconnect with their life tune, they will be able to bring soul to a relationship. Two numb and lifeless souls do not create a very fulfilling relationship.

Everything we do in life is a relationship. We have a relationship with money, we have a relationship with our body, and we even have a relationship with our car. We have a relationship with everything!

As humans, we are all interdependent. True rewarding relationship is a union of two souls who connect from their life center -- their spirit center. Staying in our own center and listening with our deepest inner knowing, is how we relate best.

The beauty of relationship is that it awakens the mystery and magic of our soul. We are like two gods creating amazing and wonderful universes of feelings and experiences together.
Why are these magical relationships so difficult to attain? For one, the element of trust is essential. We must arrive at a place where we trust ourselves and others. We must trust the fact that we know how to handle our life and make important decisions. We must also trust the fact that our mate knows how to do the same thing. Then, we can align our words and actions with our integrity, and expect the best. We must be reasonable in our expectations so that we don't place unreasonable demands on our partner.

Underneath it all, the only thing we all basically want is to be honored and respected exactly as we are. We want to feel safe, nurtured, and protected. We want to be validated, loved, and cherished. We also want to make our own choices and have those choices honored. We do not want to be told what to do or how to live our life.

A relationship is a mystery that is created stroke by stroke like a painting on a canvas. Each word we speak, every action we take, and each choice we make, is like a stroke on the canvas. Each day, we create a new segment of the painting, and each day, we add color, nuance, intensity, and energy. No two canvases are alike, just as no two people are alike.

Relationship is a miracle. It takes us all the way back to God who created us as companions. Every relationship we have is a reflection of the relationship we have with God. If we believe that God can love us, then we will believe that others can love us, and if we believe that we are not good enough for God to love, how will we be able to accept the love of others?

Let's face it. Most people are not growing very much. They have distanced themselves from being challenged and stretched. They are uncomfortable with change and are afraid to take risks. They protect their vulnerability at all costs, and are unwilling to do healing work. They want quick bandages, and they rush back to the world of stress and illusions and try to carve out some basic nutrition from a dead turkey.

The very evolution of our society shows the insecurity and fear of the people at large. Our relationships reflect our insecurities. The old relationships of the past have basically been an exchange of favors -- the wife has exchanged sex for security, and the husband exchanged work and being head of the household for a false sense of fulfillment. This is a marriage of two low selves, and this is the marriage of the average person.

The Relationship of the Future
The relationship of the future will be a blend of both the low self and high self. We will no longer have spouses and marriage certificates to make us feel safe; we will have partners who support our growth and encourage us to do what we love. We will have partners who encourage us to have our own power and express ourselves spontaneously and creatively.

This is the relationship of the future. It is the only one that will work. As soon as we have individuals who have reached that level of maturity, we will have relationships of quality and spirit. We will have true enlightenment. Enlightenment is self-actualization. When you are enlightened, the level of your success in life will depend upon your ability to let go of fear and insecurity and mistaken beliefs.

What is Enlightenment?
Enlightenment is not what you think. It is not about becoming something or gaining something. It is about giving up something. It is about losing or emptying; it is about emptying ourselves of our fears and our personal dragons.

We can achieve enlightenment by becoming personally aware. We can achieve it by peering into our inner core and looking at the shadows and the fears. Those little inner dragons are just unloved parts of ourselves. Once we find them and love them, we can tap into their vitality and energy, and use their power in our lives. When we bring them into our heart, they are no longer dragons; they are "spirit" entities who inspire us and lead us on our heroic journey of life. When we empty our low self of its fears and trepidation, there is room for God at our core. We must be empty to be filled, and when God fills us, we become enlightened.

Emotions 'R Us...

EMOTIONS 'R US
by Paula Sunray (1941 - 2007)

Are you a creator or a victim? The answer to that question determines your whole life.

Everything that we have ever experienced, we have created according to our perceptions. We can't be feeling what we are feeling unless we are "thinking" it. First we have to think and then we feel, so whatever we are feeling is a result of our thinking. If we are feeling fear, then we are having a fearful thought.

If we have a certain feeling, it is because we perceive something in a certain way. It is our perceptions, and never the circumstances, that are the problem. We observe something, and then we perceive it according to our beliefs.

If we perceive something from our low self, we will experience fear, anxiety, worry, and concern. All of our "negative'' feelings are a result of our insecurity, and all insecurity comes from the low self. We can never experience anything but insecurity until we raise the frequency of our perception from the lower part of our body (the low self) to a higher part of the body (the high self). The high self dwells in the kingdom of the heart and above.

EXERCISE I: Relocating Your Fears

Think of a fear or insecurity that you have, and notice where it is located in the body. Then just raise it to a higher chakra or location in the body.

EXERCISE II: Changing Your Feelings

Imagine that your aura is like a huge bubble that extends around you fifty feet out from your body. Breathe in and pull the bubble closer to you so that it is now only 30 feet from your body. Exhale, then breathe in another time, this time pulling your auric bubble much closer to you (about 10 feet from you). Exhale, and once again as you breathe in, pull your aura very close to you (about six inches).

Your aura is now like a cocoon around you. You will be able to feel the presence of yourself quite clearly. Now feel the presence of love in your heart area. Let that love energy shine out like the rays of the sun, filling your cocoon until you quite literally experience the feeling of love throughout your whole being. You have now changed fear and insecurity to an entirely new feeling, and you did it all by yourself as a creator choosing how you want to feel.

We are winners when we think and perceive from our high self. This is called "channeling" our high self in our everyday life. Thoughts and feelings are just energies. We can change energies. We can transform them; we can transmute them into any feeling we want.

Everything depends upon our intent. If it is our intent to heal, then we will learn to be consciously aware of the things which need to be healed. If it is our intent to punish ourselves by thinking the same negative thoughts over and over, then that is another choice.

If it is our intent to grow, learn, and evolve, then we will learn to become aware of our experiences and emotions, treat them with compassion, change the frequency by changing our thoughts and perceptions, and as a result, become masters of our experiences.

You Are Not Your Emotions

You must always remember that you are not your emotions. You are a person having an experience. If you are currently experiencing hopelessness, it is not the same as you -- you are not hopelessness; you are a person experiencing hopelessness because of the thoughts you are thinking. Ask yourself, "what would I have to be thinking in order to create a feeling of hopelessness?"

If it is your intent to feel good, then you will want to make it a point to routinely be aware of your thoughts so that you can change them if they are creating a negative feeling.

It is important to note that you will be most miserable when your thoughts are in the past or the future. You will always feel best when you are focused in the present.

What Next?

The first step in working with your emotions is to realize that emotions, including negative ones, are a natural part of being human. You will want to learn to accept and affirm anything that you are thinking and feeling, and not reject it.

If you are feeling sad, then you, a person of worth and beauty, are experiencing sadness. The sadness is separate from you. You couldn't be observing it unless it was separate from you. Just accept your experience by acknowledging and affirming it. This emotion of sadness is a real living child of energy within you. Treat it with love and tenderness as any loving parent would do.

Are You A Creator or A Victim?

We are all either creators or victims. If we believe that we have no choices and that we are powerless in life, we will live life from a victim point of view. If we take responsibility for our lives and are aware of how we create our experiences from our beliefs and perceptions, we will live life from the point of view of a creator. If we create something we don't like, then we can create something else that we like better.

The most important decision we will ever make is whether we are a victim or a creator. According to universal law, it can't be both ways. Either we are all creators or we are all victims. If we are all creators (which we are), then everybody is creating their life perfectly for their growing and evolving needs. They do not need us to judge them, help them, or rescue them. From the higher picture, they are creating every scenario in their life perfectly. If there are only creators, there can be no victims. We must not ever think of another person as a victim.

A Living Example

Some people might think that Christopher Reeve is a victim of a terrible accident which he had nothing to do with. Others of us believe that he planned the whole event before he came into this lifetime so that he could be an inspiration to others on a world level. In this way, he is able to be a living model of how to overcome adversity; he is a perfect example of how the mind can transcend the limitation of the body. By having his accident and capturing the attention of the world, he can be a teacher to the masses and we can all have a living example of how to overcome limitation.

From a higher level, everyone is setting up circumstances in their life in a purposeful way. The mean neighbor next door is creating his experiences perfectly in order to grow or learn in some way. His meek wife is also a creator and has chosen the relationship in order to learn valuable lessons which will serve her well on her soul journey throughout time.

It's Up To You

You must decide whether you are a creator or a victim and understand yourself accordingly. If you are a creator, then you have created everything for a reason and you have created it perfectly without exception, even though your low self doesn't understand that. If you don't like something, you have the ability to change it.

If you believe yourself to be a victim, then you are focused on the external world of the low self, and you are living a life of illusion, limitation, and untruth.

If you know that you are a creator, you will go within to your real place of power and create from an inner world of wisdom and higher intelligence. The only choice we ever have in the moment is where we choose to place our focus of attention -- on the outside world of the low self (the victim) or on the inside world of the high self (the creator).

The Miracle Breath - Returning to Godhood...

The Miracle Breath: Returning to Godhood
by Paula Sunray (1941-2007)
Last of a two-part series

What is the Miracle Breath? After many years as a teacher, counselor and healer, I have come into a place that is quiet, peaceful and relaxed. All of my work now is under one simple umbrella. I call it the Miracle Breath. The Miracle Breath is so profound and so simple that it can become an entire way of life. In a nutshell, it is basically learning how to accept everything just as it is so that we can move past the old world and find the new one.

We learn how to drop our reactive nature and even our inquisitive nature so that we can just let everything be as it is right now. This is called Peace. This is called being Present. This is a state of being that takes us into a space called the Void where Mother/Father principle is present -- where we are whole again, where we are real again, and where we are God again.

Creator Mind
I received the Miracle Breath one day several years ago when I was in my healing room in contemplative meditation after reading a passage in The Course in Miracles. I somehow reached a place that connected with Creator Mind. I received a "thought ball" that contained the instructions for the Miracle Breath. It was almost as though I was tuning in with the Creator who was in the act of doing the Miracle Breath.

From this simple, accidental, momentary experience, I learned the importance of imitating our Creator so that we can rediscover who we are. We can experience the true miracle of waking up -- the miracle of letting the sleeping God within us wake up and be present in this physical world. We can let its mind become the creator of the new world that has been birthed rather than continuing to create from our little personality mind that is stuck in separation from the Big Mind. This is an exciting prospect. It is happening right now and we can create miracles as simply as breathing. We can find our Big Mind again.

Source Creator as dreamer
Source Creator seems to be breathing in and out in a total state of peace, loving acceptance and quiet joy. The mind of Source Creator is a simple one. It is a dreaming Creator, and we are made in that image.

We are dreamers also. We have been living our own little dream based on the idea that we are a physical being in a physical world. But our Source Creator is dreaming grand and glorious things on many other levels. When it dreams, it loves what it dreams. It loves what it dreams so much that it becomes part of the dream. It puts parts and fragments of itself out into its images. This causes waves of consciousness. These waves become particalized when they hit our level of density, and these loving waves of images become manifested and materialized in particles that give us the illusion of physicality and material things just like the dots of light on our TV screens. It is a virtual reality, meaning that it appears as though real people, places, and things are on the TV screen, but we know in actual fact that the only real thing that exists is the entity that is putting the images on the screen. We have come to believe that we are the characters on the screen and we have gotten quite carried away in the scenario, but it is time now to wake up and remember our true identity.

We have created a world of pain and suffering. Our separate little self tends to create dream movies that literally terrorize us with fear and conflict, pain and suffering. Our collective little selves have created a nightmare of virtual hell -- of constant conflict and battles, within and without. We have also created a heavenly haven of many beautiful and wonderful things, especially in the world of music and artistic creativity. It is a world of duality.

The New World
The new dream that we are collectively dreaming is much more harmonious now. The new world ideal is to have both sides of the duality filled with harmony. There will be only harmony running through all things in the new world. We will no longer sense things as separate in the many layers of the mind. There will be just One Mind, One Unified Chakra, One God, which is ourself.

We could say that the world you see with your physical eyes is a past world. It is an illusion that seems to still be present. It is as though the light of its existence is just reaching our eyes even though it is a past world. We must learn how to place our focus of attention on the new world in spite of the illusion that the old one is still present.

There is already peace. There is already harmony. There is already joy -- NOW -- in the new dream. The real Great Mind is breaking through into this realm and is already dreaming its dream, but many of us are not present with it. Wherever we place our focus is what we will experience. We have the choice of two worlds now -- the old one or the new one. Where are you placing your attention?

There is not a wrong or a right, but there is a big difference in the experience that you have, depending upon where you place your attention. We are all waking up together now. The slumbering vast mind of the Creator is waking up and only good things are coming -- only good things are already present.

Helping you now
The Miracle Breath releases the focused attention on the old world and allows you to slip into zero point. Then you can move within to a place called bliss, into the real space of creation, into the real manifesting Mind.

The new dream is a dream of unity and oneness because that is all the Creator can ever be -- unless parts of itself choose to fall asleep. In the creative process, the Creator fragments its own body into many waves and particles of experience, and it loves all parts of itself equally.

It sounds nice on paper, but can I really do it?

Waking up
There are many words written about the waking-up process, many books to read, many paths to follow. It sounds very nice on paper and there are many teachers, healers, and counselors, but there are so very few who are awake and reunited with the Source Mind, which is their one true mind. Why is that?

It is because our binary separate mind -- our little ego personality mind -- has created this entire world of illusion, and it requires our attention to keep it alive. It is a living mass of consciousness that will strongly oppose any idea of us removing our attention from its existence. It cannot live without our energy and attention. It must be fed to stay alive. This is what we call the Great Saboteur. It is the great feeding mind that lives on banquets of pain and suffering based on the idea that we are separate from our Creator. How can we be happy and joyful when we are a partial self that is separated from its true LIFE support system? How can we step out of the feeding process and find our true self again?

We must be present NOW in order to wake up to our whole self again.

The old illusion will continue painfully along its way for a very long time, evolving one slow step at a time, continuing to place attention on irrelevant things. This is not bad; it is simply ignorance. We have been removed from the truth, and there are very few systems that can allow the truth here because the whole system would perish if we removed our attention.

We are all ignorant in the illusion, because the real world is on the other side of the veil. The real world is trying to reach us. It is within us. It is present now. But we are not present now. We are distracted by the little mind that needs to be fed by the little world. We are not present now. We are not calm or peaceful enough to slip and fall into the real mind within.

Awakening is simple
The Miracle Breath is a simple, miraculous and profound tool for awakening and remembering our godhood. The old world of illusion is based on complexity and unending red tape. It doesn't trust anything that is so simple and so present right now. It doesn't believe in the miraculous without tremendous effort. A true miracle happens without our effort. When we stop efforting, we will experience more miracles. We will experience the miracle that WE are.

The path of godhood is not an easy one, but it is a very simple one. It is not an easy one, because we must leave everything we have been and just stop and let everything be as it is so that we can come into the Now Moment. We must stop reacting and worrying. We must stop trying to figure things out. We must get off the spiritual path that leads us to a future. Godhood cannot be found in the little mind that is preoccupied with the idea of a past and future. Godhood is present now. The process is very simple. It is as simple as breathing in and out with full conscious awareness; it is being fully present in a state of relaxed presence. But how many can even do that -- be present enough to breathe with conscious awareness?

When you stop and think about it, we are still pretty much asleep. We must be aware of this and admit to it before we can make any real progress. It helps to belong to a group, which practices conscious awareness on a regular basis. It takes discipline, devotion and much focus to wake up and retrieve your whole self. It must be a priority in one's life, otherwise the whole world will eat you alive with its need to be fed. The choice you make determines not only your own life but the fate of the entire universe. You can awaken now or you can choose the long laborious process of linear awakening. Do you want to be God now or later?

Doing the Miracle Breath
Leave all problems of Earth life outside the door right now. Just for now, allow yourself to be in a neutral space where you can relax, replenish and restore. Your body, mind and spirit need frequent breaks in order to rest and relax. This is crucial not only for optimum health but for the quality of your life in general. The Miracle Breath is a crucial tool for the new Divine Human.

Long Version
Step 1.
Breathe in a deep full breath (from lower abdomen to upper lungs), and then breathe out making a sound through your mouth. Do this at least three times. This releases tension and stress in your body. Really let go.

Step 2. Find a place in the center of yourself and just begin to breathe into this area. As you breathe, begin to relax all the muscles in your body.

Step 3. When you feel totally relaxed, let your Spirit touch the Spirit of the NOW moment. Let yourself be fully present in this now moment in the room where you are sitting. Feel the quality of the NOW moment around you. Once you are fully present to the NOW moment outside yourself, find the NOW moment within yourself. Stay focused deep within yourself.

Step 4. Breathe in saying, "I breathe in the Now Moment." (Feel and experience the present moment within you as you do it). Breathe out saying, "I relax into Peace." (Relax all of your muscles as you breathe out. Imagine that you have been a beach umbrella that has been open, and now you are closing the beach umbrella. (You may also think of yourself as an octopus that is dropping all tentacles to its side).

Step 5. Say to yourself, "I let the world be as it is." Let everything be as it is, including yourself. Let go of any need to control, change, fix or heal anything. Surrender to the silence of the Now Moment ceasing all thinking. Just experience a state of BEING and keep repeating "I let the world be as it is."

Short Version follows
After you have done the full preparation (Long Version) several times, you will be able to go to the relaxed place within at any time of day, no matter where you are or what you are doing, and you will simply be able to repeat the two sentences of the Miracle Breath:

"I breathe in the Now Moment" (focus deep within yourself).
"I relax into Peace" (surrender into peace, relaxing all muscles and dropping all tentacles).

What it does
The simple practice of the Miracle Breath can bring about profound changes in your life. It centers you within and aligns your body with your spirit. It can significantly reduce stress and therefore can be useful in reducing or preventing illness in your body. Since you are dropping your negative reactions to the outside world, it can significantly improve your relationships, and it can significantly increase your level of self-acceptance and self-worth.

The Miracle Breath has a detoxifying effect on the physical body, as well as the mental body. It reduces negative emotion significantly, therefore you have fewer negative experiences. It helps to integrate the old brain and the new brain and brings you into the NOW moment.

The Miracle Breath affects your material surroundings in a positive way and affects other people in a positive way. Because it follows the laws of the universe, it creates a new space for abundance, inner peace and general well-being. It disconnects cords with other people and disconnects you from past problems and future worries. Most importantly, it connects you with your Higher Mind so that you can hear your own inner guidance.

It can accelerate spiritual growth and healing on all levels. Used correctly, it can slow down time and the aging process. It takes you to zero point, where duality merges into oneness. It not only activates your own divinity, it keeps you centered within your divinity during your daily activities.

If everyone practiced the miracle breath for just a few minutes every day, it would change the world! As one who practices the Miracle Breath, you can have a big impact on transforming our world from a place of fear and limitation to a place of peace and abundant wholeness.

NOW is the best place to be...

NOW is the Best Place to Be
by Paula Sunray (1941-2007)
First of a two-part series

Who is here now? The REAL you. The unreal you lives in the past and future. It believes that there is such a thing as time. But time can only exist if there are two separate points of reference. If there is a belief that there is a God outside of us, then the space between God and us creates the sense of time. It takes time to travel between two points. If there is no space between God and ourselves, then there is no time; there is only NOW.

When we are in our minds thinking, our thoughts are normally engaged with the past or future, which means that we have formed a separation. We are not present with our true self, therefore we are not in the Now.

Why is NOW so important? Because NOW is the only place where we can be whole again, remember who we are and wake up to the fact that All That Is is present now and we are All That ls. Even the tiniest fraction of us is a holographic piece of the whole. We always contain the whole, but we must be present with it and not feel as though we are separate from it. We must be present with what is already present. It is that simple. It is that simple.

Presence of Self
The next step is to practice the presence of Self. We must be that Self and really feel it so that we can remember who we are. Because we are so used to living in a fast-paced world, we must first slow ourselves down -- slow our mind down, relax our muscles and drop into the present moment. Surrender into it, fall into it.

I have developed a tool called the Miracle Breath, which helps me stay present in the now moment. I have been so encouraged with the results that I now train Miracle Breath Practitioners in my classes. The Miracle Breath involves a simple breath as you say to yourself, "I breathe in the now moment." As you breathe out, you say, "I relax into peace." [The instructions for the full Miracle Breath are available to you on my website at www.newearthcenter.com and I'll discuss the Miracle Breath more next month.]

Here is the catch. There is a part of ourselves that almost violently resists being present in the now. That part is the part of ourselves that became altered long ago -- altered in that it felt separated from its Source after originally feeling One with Source. I call this part the altered ego or the negative ego. It could also be called the saboteur, because it is the one who sabotages our life.

Because the saboteur was created out of the belief of separation, it has become a god almost in the amount of power it has. It exists only when we think and engage in the idea of a past or future. If we withdraw our focus of attention from the past or future, it loses its power and feels as though it is dying. It fears losing control. It feels weakened, panicky and afraid when we are fully present with our true self, so it distracts us so that we once again get lost in thoughts of the past or future.

This altered ego
It is my belief that one cannot walk the spiritual route the full way without first understanding the nature of this altered ego. Very few people teach this. Very few people are even aware of it. Since most of our systems were created by the altered ego, there is very little knowledge available.

The best way to overcome the resistance of the saboteur is to go into practicing the presence of your real whole self. Breathe and say, "I breathe in my divinity," and then breathe out wholeness. Breathe in wholeness. Breathe out your divinity until you once again align yourself and feel the presence of your true self sitting here fully present and fully alive.

It takes no time to find your Self. You are that Self. You don't need a spiritual path to find it. You don't need to take classes to find it. You don't need to be wiser or more loving to find it. It is here now. It is what we have been resisting most. When we practice the presence of now, we fall into a state of deep inner peace. When we learn to experience a deep inner peace, we know that we have found our true inner self. We talk about peace a lot but we rarely accomplish the actual state of being in our own lives or in the world in general.

The altered ego does not like peace. It thrives on conflict and drama. Conflict and drama feed it and keep it alive. If it isn't fed, it will have to repeatedly conjure up additional conflict in our lives so that it can be fed and remain alive. One must learn how to feed one's REAL self, breathing the breath of divinity, fanning the fires within of the real self rather than giving attention to the altered ego which is our little personality self. It is almost like a battle taking place within us. It can feel like an Armageddon. It is the enormous fight between the Sabotager and the Real Self.

Not taking sides
Who will win? It is not a matter of taking sides. In fact, the crucial understanding is that we don't take sides at all. We simply stay in a state of peace rather than reacting to either side. This is the secret of godhood. Peace is our most valuable commodity. It changes us, it changes our past, it changes our future, it changes our present. It affects our entire world and our entire universe when we sit in a state of peace.

The exciting research of David Hawkins in his book Power vs. Force shows that we can actually measure the vibrational energy of our feeling states. Courage is measured at 200. Love at 500. Joy is 540. PEACE is 600! David Hawkins says that one person at level 300 has the ability to counterbalance the negativity of 90,000 people. One person at level 500 can counterbalance 750,000 people. One person at level 600 can shift 50 million people. It reminds me of the words of the song, "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me."

The state we choose now affects the whole world. When we choose peace in our personal lives, we choose to do only those things that make us feel peaceful. We respond to all events with the breath of peace. This is what I call the Miracle Breath. This is the miracle that can change the world. We change nothing outside of ourselves. We change only the state of being within ourselves. This is the greatest service work. The saboteur wants you to believe that you are needed to save the world through action-oriented activities so that you will be too busy to be in a state of peace. That is why there are still wars in this world and such a state of unrest. It will never change until we change our self.

When we find our true self again, this is the real beginning of spiritual experience. We now can talk with our true Divine Self, commune with it, and form a deep and meaningful relationship with it. Only one Great Being exists and It is in a profound state of communing with and loving Itself. That is why we say that loving ourselves is the greatest thing we can do. We are then like the Creator. When we act, feel, and love like the Creator, we are the Creator. We are in the constant state of loving ourselves and all that we are.

The spiritual "journey" does not begin until we find our Self. We then wake up and find real LIFE within us. We then begin to create from our real self rather than the small, altered personality self who lives in a world of fear, chaos and suffering.

An exciting moment
Now is an exciting moment. The moment right now is the most exciting time that has ever existed, because it contains All That Is. All That Is is here right now -- and it is YOU. Perhaps you would like to put this paper down and sit and breathe in the present moment and relax into peace, feeling the presence of your true magnificent Divine Self. Eventually one can be in this state of Presence throughout the day. Your true self is your own Higher Self and as it begins to express itself in your life, you will find only peace, harmony, joy, laughter and playfulness. We are restored to our own natural, whole, playful self. The soul by its very nature is a joyful, playful, creative being. If your day is joyful, playful and creative, then you know that you are in tune with your true self.

A new world has been birthed now. The old one that we look out at through our physical eyes is past and gone much like an ancient star that we are now seeing for the first time in the skies. It is no longer there, but we are seeing it for the first time because it took that long for its light to reach us. Likewise, the world that we see through our physical eyes is an illusion. Think about it, because it is true.

When a new world was birthed in the last several years, we changed the software within our being to one of "ascension." Ascension is simply the process of beginning a new life in an old body, and from that point of view we have already ascended. True ascension is really an incension into one's own physical body. Spirit incends into the physical body becoming one with it, filling the physical body with light. The two become a grand team of creators in the new world.

The last thing we want to do now is leave our physical body and leave this world. We must now fully incend into the body and be the new breed of god that has recently been birthed. We become a full Divine Human when the divine within us becomes alive. It comes alive when we practice breathing affirmations. "I breathe in my full divinity I breathe out wholeness." "I breathe in wholeness and I breathe out my divinity." When we breathe in, we fan the flames of the divinity within us, and when we breathe out we express that divinity through our words and actions. We must consciously activate the new divinity within us. Otherwise, it can wilt much like a plant that goes unwatered.

Old software
Many of us who have been spiritually oriented are reluctant humans. We do not want to fully incarnate into the body. We think that spiritual means ascending and leaving the body. That was the old software. It is just the opposite now. The world is different now. We no longer need to feel that we don't belong here. Because of the explosion of higher consciousness, a new world has been created that is specifically a place to be fully human and fully divine. We merge the two in a new venture -- a new experiment. No one is in charge of the experiment. We ourselves are the ones in charge of the whole experience. What will we create in the new void? Time will tell.

Now through a natural process of awakening, the stirrings of a remembered godhood are rising within us and a new Self is beginning to emerge. We are true magicians now. The impossible is no longer impossible. Miracles are here NOW. We are that miracle. Our true Divine Human Self is beginning the process of creating and exploring an entirely new world based on harmony, love and joy. There is no better place to be than here, and there is no greater moment than NOW. So be it and so it is.

World Peace and Prayer Day

19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe
Founder of World Peace and Prayer Day/Honoring Sacred Sites Day

Wolakota Foundation is the outgrowth of the annual World Peace and Prayer Day (WPPD) celebrations begun in 1996 by Chief Arvol Looking Horse. When Arvol was twelve years old, he was designated as the 19th Generation Keeper of the Tradition of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe. People of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Sioux Nation believe White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared to the tribes hundreds of years ago, bringing instruction in sacred ceremonies of how to live in balance with all life, and leaving behind a sacred bundle containing a sacred pipe of peace. She left prophecies about a time in which she would return again. The 1994 birth of a white buffalo calf is believed to have been the sign that these times were now at hand.

Following spiritual guidance, Arvol committed to a series of ceremonies at sacred sites to join people together in prayers and to share the message of his Tradition with others who shared concerns about peace and the destruction of the Earth. The initial objective was honoring the four directions with four annual ceremonies. The first ceremony took place in the West at Gray Horn Butte in Wyoming following a horseback ride from the Wahpeton Dakota reservation in Saskatchewan. Tradition holds that it was near this site White Buffalo Calf Woman first appeared. For this ceremony, over 2,000 people joined together, mostly drawn by word-of-mouth. In 1997, Chief Sundown of the Joseph Bighead Reserve in Canada hosted the ceremonies for the North. In 1998, the gathering moved East to Pipestone, Minnesota, another traditional sacred site.

Chief Looking Horse decided on Costa Rica as the site for the 1999 ceremonies. By bringing together native people of North and South America, it is also believed that this event fulfilled prophesies concerning the uniting of the eagle and the condor. Costa Rica is the home of the University for Peace established by the United Nations and, thus, World Peace and Prayer Day first gained international recognition. The original journey of WPPD was completed when it came back to the center for a Thank You Ceremony to the "Heart of Everything That Is" - the Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota in the year 2000.

Believing that the initial effort was complete, Arvol asked the Global Community to continue the ceremony at their sacred sites whether it is at a place of worship or at a significant geographical site their Nation or Faith identifies as greatly important. This handed back the responsibility of continuing the prayers and activities to the local people in each community and country.

After the 2000 ceremony, two English representatives approached Arvol with a request to conduct a similar series of ceremonies to further strengthen the message of Peace at a global level. This time, the journey would be around the world to the remaining four continents with a Thank You Ceremony back at Turtle Island (Americas) in five years.

This global journey commenced in Ireland in 2001, lending support to a country whose "troubles" are beginning to seek resolution, a country with a long tradition of Summer Solstice celebrations.

In 2002, WPPD traveled to Durban, South Africa working with the coordinating assistance of Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi. Many thousands responded to this event in a show of peaceful solidarity, celebrating their cultural and ethnic diversity.

In 2003, WPPD joined the Aboriginal tribes of Australia, honoring their most sacred site of Barumbuk, while bringing attention to the need for healing of their 'lost generation.'

In 2004, WPPD will travel to Mt. Fuji, Japan to honor their indigenous connections to this very famous sacred site.

2005 brought us back to the Black Hills for a final "Wopila" - the thank you ceremony. Here again, the responsibility returned to the people. The four direction Prayer Run for World Peace and the Prayer Ride for World Peace from Canada, converged on the beginning of the WPPD event, with Mayor Shaw of Rapid City and Chief Arvol Looking Horse doing the opening ceremony. Those present in the initiation of the 10th year event were International delegates from New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, China, Japan, Canadian First Nations, Mexico, India, and various Tribes from First Nations around Turtle Island. A Water Ceremony, Earth Ceremony, Wind Ceremony and Horse Dance Ceremony (by the First Nation's Cree) were offered by the various Nation's Traditional Knowledge of their Nation. Sustainable Resource speakers, musicians, Youth organizers & participants, various Spiritual Leaders and environmentalists offered their knowledge and shared a gift of their life¹s journey they have chosen to walk.

2006 and beyond: We are now focused on creating mass awareness of "all nations, all faiths, one prayer" to encourage everyone to take time on June 21st and join in the united prayer/meditation to heal our Grandmother Earth. We also continue to work towards having June 21st recognized by the United Nations as "Honoring Sacred Sites Day", in an effort to protect places that people consider sacred.

The celebrations to date have been achieved on a shoestring budget with small donations and grants received under the fiduciary assistance of the Rediscovery Foundation, Inc. As the mission of sharing our traditional wisdom has become global, the necessity of creating the Wolakota Foundation and raising money to fund related programs arose.

The vision for this new organization is that it will continue the World Peace and Prayer Day celebrations through 2005 while building a center with programs for sustaining traditional teachings of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Nation as well as researching and demonstrating practices for sustainable, ecologically-balanced living, and sharing this wisdom with the world.
